So say YES to SOAP. No, its not an effort to get our members to bathe more often. SOAP is an acronym that stands for a method of devotional study of Scripture. The method relies heavily on extended reading and a small amount of journaling. Looking at the SOAP method, many people ask, “How is this different from reading the Upper Room or the Daily Bread daily devotionals. First of all, this covers a lot more Scripture. This is not a one-verse snack. This is a complete meal of God’s Word. Second, and most importantly, you aren’t reading someone else’s experience, you are reflecting on your own experience with God. Here’s how it works: First, grab a Bible you are comfortable with, a notebook, and something to write with. Next, read the chapters assigned for the day from Scripture. That’s the “S” in SOAP. There are usually about three chapters to read. Read carefully, but most of all, read prayerfully. When you are reading three chapters of Scripture, chances are good that you will see a verse that catches your attention. When you do, write down in your own words what it says.
